1948—From one airplane and one pilot in Peru, JAARS now has more than 59 pilots, more than 41 aviation mechanics and 7 avionics technicians serving more than 636 language projects around the world. 1960—From the Amazon jungle to a cotton field south of Waxhaw, North Carolina, the two-year search for a suitable location for JAARS in the United States ends when a Christian businessman donates 256 acres of land for a training center. 1963—JAARS is incorporated in North Carolina, becoming an official organization in the United States with two major departments—Aviation and Radio. JAARS today has six international operating departments. 1972—Construction and Maintenance (CAM) officially comes on board. Today there are more than 150 CAM workers serving in the United States and overseas. 1976—International Computer Services becomes a JAARS department. Today computer programmers, technicians, support specialists, and teachers, plus email, HF radio and satellite phone services are provided through Information Technology Services. 1982— Purchasing and Shipping becomes an official JAARS department. Praise God for the warehouse facility, dedicated in 1997, that has greatly improved efficiency in serving the field worker. 1985—Materials Transportation is incorporated as a JAARS department. Annually, JAARS truckers cover more than 300,000 miles, hauling millions of pounds for Wycliffe, SIL and other mission customers. 1993—Vernacular Media Services becomes the newest JAARS department. Trainees completing the VMS classes join media specialists at work in more than 25 countries. |
